As well as teaching, the sailing centre hires out Pico and Wayfarer boats as well as kayaks and motor boats. You will need an RYA level 2 certificate (at minimum) to hire sailing boats. You can also hire boats on Ullswater.

Sometimes special cruises might feature musical evenings or dinners afloat.

Coniston Launch provides an environmentally friendly passenger boat service to 7 jetties including Brantwood (50p discount). The North Face Trail

There are some fantastic mountain biking trails in the area. Worthy of special note is the new mountain bike trail for Grizedale which has been built thanks to sponsorship from The North Face and Rural Regeneration Cumbria. Starting at the Grizedale Visitor Centre the new North Face Mountain Bike Trail is a 10 mile track consisting of 9 new sections of sinuous singletrack trail on the west side of Grizedale Forest.

The trail offers adrenalin charged sections of single track descent with leg burning up hills, contouring through oak woodlands and conifer forest. This challenging trail also gives the mountain biker tricky board walk sections through meadows yet reward the trail rider with outstanding views along the way. The new facilities at Grizedale are just across on the ferry from Bowness

Climb 365 is based in the English Lake District. It is owned and run by Stuart and Anna Carter and offers a wide range of land based rock climbing and mountaineering activities.

Climb365 caters for all levels of ability from the complete novice trying rock climbing or scrambling for the first time, to the experienced mountaineer wanting to learn to lead in winter. They have taken out children as young as 6 and adults as young as 70. All their activities are provided by fully qualified mountain instructors or guides.

Climb365 is a member of AMI (The Association of Mountain Instructors), ALLA (The Adventure Activity Licencing Authority) and the CTB (Cumbria Tourist Board).

The Bassenthwaite Ospreys - Bassenthwaite Lake

The ospreys are wild birds that chose each year to nest in the forest overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake in North West Cumbria. The viewpoint, exhibition and live video close during the winter and reopen in early April. The Lake District Osprey Project provides both an open air viewpoint and indoor exhibition with live video pictures for visitors from April to September annually.

In 2006 the ospreys reared 3 chicks - a first for the Lake District. In 2008 the new nesting site is much closer to the observation platform.

The Queens Head - Troutbeck - just up the hill from the lodge serves fine beer and gastropub type food. Very popular with walkers and residents so get up there early in Summer if you want a table.

A bit further afield but such a lovely family restaurant that it’s worth the drive. Excellent Italian food next to Dove Cottage (Villa Colombina geddit?). Reasonably priced with immaculate service and they take kids so seriously that our 10 year old was visibly proud, and kept saying how much he liked it! A big thumbs up for the child portions and doggy bags too. Our favourite Lake District restaurant so far. Reservations advised as it’s justifiably very popular.

The field past the church and the river on the right often hosts local events like Troutbeck’s famous duck race. Local trainers spend the Summer months training mallards for this, the most prestigious of Cumbria’s duck races. (OK that last bit isn’t true but the duck race is a great afternoon out!)
